Can't make my mind up about the willow. I could use it for wigwams in some large pots I have but I'm a little worried about what you said Peter. What do you mean by poisonous? If I were to grow beans or small squash up it, would it affect the fruit/veg itself?

e.g. Weedkiller or (now illegal) Creosote.
Willow was the original natural source of Aspirin, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirin
So if you were to eat enough, besides getting splinters in your guts, might suffer intestinal bleeding.Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

To make an asprin drink, you just boil willow bark for a while in water and drink the resultant brew.
However, whilst you wont get splinters in your guts as Peter suggests there is absolutely no way of knowing how much asprin you are ingesting so it would be rather more prudent to go to the chemist and spend 10 bob on some proper asprin tablets.
However if you are stranded on a remote island that has willow trees and you get toothache, your sorted.

Piglet, if you chew up wood you get splinters, watch a dog.
BTW, it was a tongue in cheek comment, possibly trying to get the bark out of my teeth.
Also the wiki is quite an interesting one with the other plant, yes?
Like the new avatar, looks strangely innocent.Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

Hi Grapes - if anyone's interested, the next willow coppicing date in Godalming, Surrey is Friday 16th Feb. Didn't go on last cut as we had enough trees being blown down by the strong winds without the likes of me chopping away. I'll be going to this one though. Will be a Hazel day in March I believe. Anyone interested?
