Am I jumping the gun ?

Yesterday I dug a trench for my runner beans and filled it with un-composted garden waste.
Runner beans to be planted out in May.

No, that's fine. Is the trench still open? If so you can carry on adding to it throughout the winter.

No carry on, add as much waste as you possibly can to the soil. Do more than one trench if you like, and use it for other thirsty plants like pumpkins.

You're certainly not jumping the gun, and as has been said, keep filling it or start another one if the first one is full up.
My only problem was that my veggies grow in my garden, and an open trench of vegetable matter caused huge amounts of mice/rats etc.

Originally I was told to dig the trench, chuck in your veggie matter and then cover in soil, whilst waiting for the next lot. That didnt work.
There are other ways, some humane, some less so. I didnt use poisons, as much as I dont like rats I wouldnt want them to die unpleasantly, and tbh with the numbers I had, even traps didnt really make too much difference, they still came.
There are no cats in my house, so no help there.
In the end I just stopped digging the trenches, was the only way I found to stop the rodent invasion.
Probably not too much of a problem if you have a lotty, as they can be a reasonable distance from houses, plus wild cats soon learn where there is food available, but in the garden, it became too much of a problem for me.

Yes the trench is open and I have slightly covered with soil. When the waste has broken down I shall fill with compost..Hopefully this will be march ish time.

Plan to dig my trench for next year this weekend as go on holiday soon and by the time I come back it we'll already be well into October. Dug it early last year too. Filled it with kitchen compostables. One thing I did learn from last year though was not to add potato peelings to it as they 'sprouted' and I've been pulling them up for months.
