Had a quick look at the link 'BBC Gardeners Calendar' - will have a detailed look when I have a bit more time but it looks really helpful. Just what I need without ploughing through tons of not so helpful stuff.

Brief visit to the site, but a few suggestions :

              a) Kale
              b) Garlic - maybe mid-October ideally
              c) Japanese onions
              d) Calabrese (only works if you gamble on a warmish winter)
              e) Spring onions
              f) Leeks

There are probably a lot more, but it depends on your location. the above is what I'm hoping can get a month or so of growth and will withstand the cold and all of them are dead-certs unless we get loads of frost in November.

Radish and lettuce, especially if you can bring them into a greenhouse or give some protection if in open ground. I just put some Japanese overwintering onions in for the first time so I'm not sure how they'll cope with a Cumbrian winter.
