  • Baby sweetcorn

    Afternoon lovely grapes

Just wondering how I know when to harvest baby sweetcorn! There are definately some cobs there, but when do I pick them?
    Cheers!

As soon as possible I reckon. I have grown baby sweetcorn for stir fries this year too and found that if they get too big then they will become woody and unpalatable. Now, I've left them to become mature cobs for eating as normal sweetcorn, but the kernels do not look as fat and juicy so I think I have made a mistake this time.

Glad you asked - I've some cobs on mine and the "tassles" are a reddish colour. I wondered when I should harvest them - looks like about now would be good.

For normal sweetcorn the tassles have to frizzle and go brown before they are ready. Not so with mini corn where you eat the whole lot. They are picked immature BEFORE the tassles have frizzled!

I think I can rescue them - the tassles are a reddish colour, but they're not frazzled/withered yet. YOu can see photos of them on my blog. They still have a bit of "sheen" to them.
