  • PW I am gutted . From 38 seedlings out of 49 of your seeds sown on 1 January - I now have a princely 3 left . Something in my greenhouse got the rest last night. There is no slime trail so I am assuming it must have been woodlice. Just two weeks ago the GH was cleaned and disinfected using a ***** Fluid solution, but I have already had baby snails and slugs to contend with. It is downright depressing! Today I painted the sides of all my trays thickly with Vaseline hoping to deter the beasties.

I don't know if it is worth sowing some more seeds at this late date.

      • Hi Piglet,
I have to report similar situation i.e. rather less than 50% germination BUT good seedlings in more than sufficient quantity to provide seed for next season- if I handle things right. Got the point about full ripeness.

        Thanks again,

        Berr.

          • Germinator. Why not hold of and sow some direct into your plot when the coming cold spell is over, you have nothing to loos. SHALLOTMAN

            • Germination rate was about 60% but those which did germinate have developed into good strong plants, hardening them off when the weather is OK, they are about 3" high and developing nicely

                  • The day after I sowed half my seed, the builders knocked the tray all over the floor. They scooped the soil back into the module tray and 8 seeds germinated. They were 2" high on Friday morning.

Then someone left the door open, the chickens got in and ate the lot.

How gutted am I? I do have some left though, so I'm going to put them in on Friday (next root day).

I child-proofed my house, but they still manage to get in.

                    • All the seedlings that survived being pricked out are looking good - most are growing their third leaf and growing away strongly.

My only problem now is lack of space in the greenhouse - i'm packed to capacity!!

                      • I sowed them all and 5 germinated. One died and now there are 4.

                          • Bramble, please forgive me, that was a wicked thing for Percy to say, but it really made me laugh.... Humour at it's best I fear! Although it's probably getting 'on the late side' to re-sow, I'd be more than happy to send you some of the spare seeds I have. Please PM me if you would like me to.
