  • Thanks for that advice about replanting PW, we're going to save a couple of the biggest and a few of the better medium sized ones for growing next year, any advice on when to plant them out?
    Blessings

    • Good looking Banana Shallots there Protea. I think that puts you in the competition with the Dobbies. There's £10 riding on this folks. Anybody got better ones.

        • Yes, we harvested some beauts on our 'home page' as well! but we're using them rather than showing them, so compete away without us? Otherwise, I'd love to have taken a Tenner off Piglet, believe me!

We did discuss the level of germination at Malvern over coffee Piggy, and you subsequently found that out, but I DID germinate mine in a propagator, having EXCELLENT germination results. BUT, I have heard that advice given before, which also holds true for Lettuce seed too, does it not?

Good luck to all taking part for The Tenner!

          • Could you not just let us see them before you eat them Wellie ?

            • Alas not Alice! They were all photographed on our 'home page' (!) and have mostly been used for Trousers' Sarnies and gorgeous dishes to tide us over in the 'leaner months ahead' from our freezers!

Perhaps Piggy will give us all another go next year as well. Let's just hope that Trousers and I have somewhere to live by then to take part, eh?!

Go get that Tenner Peeps! Run Piggy, Run!

                • Hazel, if I wanted to borrow A Tenner from Piglet, honestly darling, he'd loan it to me, and now you know that for yourself?!
And I know what you're up to, and it won't work.
This photo does not represent the sheer quality of Banana Shallot that we grew, and you know it!

                  • I was just 'blown away' with the taste of them .... thank you to PW for letting me have a couple of his mighty fine specimens to plant for seed collection so I can grow some next time round - I didn't know that about the germination temp, so you live and learn! Piggy's not said when to plant these for seed - would you put the sets in about now-ish?

                    • No, wait until about the end of March time when its not too wet underground and plant them somewhere out of the way as they will not be ready for harvesting the seed until late August. if you are very impatient you can start them of in 1 litre pots undercover at the beggingng of March but I would only do this if they started to sprout.

Now then MrsD and Protea or anybody else with bananas from my seed, a photo please c/w measure of your biggest shallot, a £10 gardening voucher is up for grabs.

                        • Wait until Just after Christmas Bramble as per traditional onion seed, and transplant outside in April time if the grounds good enough.

Its too dark and much too much damp over winter to nurse them through till then.
