  • Cayenne Pepper question

I know this may be a daft question to some but here goes.

Once your cayenne plant has produced peppers, do you bin the plant as you would with a tomato plant or grow from it the following year?

I am sure I had a Birds Eye Chili plant years ago that I kept on the windowsill which bore fruit over two years.

If you bring it inside over the winter it will fruit again early next year. I have had loads of peppers from the one i overwinered last winter.

That's great, thanks for the info.

It is in an unheated plastic 6 x 4 greehouse at the minute, any idea how long I should leave it before I bring it indoors?

Sorry, forgot to ask, does the same apply to sweet pepper plants too?

Peppers will stop growing under about 10 degrees and die off below 5 degrees. I'd bring in any you want to keep during October when it gets a bit colder at night.

I think it will work for sweet peppers too - but I haven't tried it as they are a bit too big for me to keep inside.

Last year, i just trimmed off some of the branches and was really sparing with water over the winter - I don't think they like much. I kept 3 plants inside but 1 died off - not a bad success rate for my first year and they have been far more prolific this season than the chilli seeds I sowed this year.

            Ok, thanks.

Why not have a go with these Pepper : Sweet : Mini Bell Mixed (Seeds) I have some growing at the minute and they are only a couple of foot tall with lots of little peppers on.

I over-wintered 5 chilli plants last year and 4 of them survived, the 5th was my fault. The 4 that survived were 2 Apaches, a Numex Twilight and a Lantern. I just brought them inside on a sunny windowsill for the winter and watered them sparingly. They have all produced a good crop this year. This year I have 3 "Hot Cayennnes" I've grown from seed I got from Wilkos and I will defo be trying to over-winter them.

I grew this one from seed, one of those mixed packets from Poundland. The sweet Canape peppers I planted from the same packet are doing well too. Just shows you don't have to spend loads on some seeds.

I've just brought 4 of my best plants in now, it was about 7c this morning and in the week my thermometer said it was 5c, a bit too cold for my liking, I think my chillies will love me more if I keep them in the warm now.

The one thing I didn't realise until I brought them in is just how big they seem, I didn't batter an eye lid while in the garden but as soon as I brought them in doors they seem to look so much bigger.
