Blanching Leeks using tubes

Hi
I’ve read lots about blanching leeks and was going to try putting rainwater pipe over the leeks to increase the white stem. When do you do this when first planted or when they are approaching maturity?

when first planted.....pringles tubes work well.....and an excuse to eat more crisps!

I use upturned pop bottles as watering holes ... and there's always a snail or 3 inside them. Saves hunting them down at nightfall.

if you put the beer trap there as well - all they will need is the TV
