Spring Greens

I've just sown some spring greens (Cabbage April if that's relevant :-))

Will I need to put these under a cloche to keep the frost at bay or just under netting to keep the pesky pigeons off?

they are hardy so no need for cloche - but certanly netting will be needed and pronto after planting, the pigeons don't care what it's called, they'll chow down

Definitely just the netting, if you keep them too warm they'll bolt as soon as spring arrives. Overwintering crops tend to use the cold months to put down a good root system which then fuels the growth spurt which gives you an early harvest. The top growth generally seems a bit slow, but that's perfectly normal. With certain spring cabbages there is enough top growth to pick as spring greens from November, but they won't heart up until spring.

You may have left it a little late to be sowing seed ... packet says sow August-September.

I'm in Peterborough and they've been in for a couple of weeks in a raised bed. Just started to show their little green heads :-)

Sheltered spot in a south west facing garden.

We've still got tomatoes in growbags ripening outside :-) Yum.

If you have enough plants there's nothing to stop you growings some outdoors and some under cloches or even in a greenhouse. This is what I do to give a succession of plants!
