  • Most vicious courgette?

    I grew a few different courgettes and squash this year, and whilst your standard "run-of-the-mill" courgette has quite nasty spikes on the stems etc, I think I've found the most vicious (in my humble experience).

    Lebanese.

    The spikes on the stems are just nasty - scratching up your hands as you search for the fruit. Then, when you get the fruit that too has spikes. These ones stick in your fingers (I've got delecate office worker hands), and then when the spikes break off they leave a sticky residue on the actual courgette.

    They taste really nice though, so I may just grow them again and harvest them with elbow length gloves on.

    I harvested the last two last night for dinner.

      I've grown 'Tristan' this year - almost spineless stalks And hardly any of them rotted at the flower end either, bonus!

        They are all lethal to me as i have an allergy to them I found this out after having 30plus plants on the go;I noe have to were kevlar armgusrds and gloves when picking my squashes

          Haven't tried growing courgettes yet, though I might try next year, must make a note not to grow this one, I have office workers hands too.

            Try Gherkins next time, they practice being lethal......|Well, according to my missus anyway who is really sensitive etc and so forth............hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..

              Don't give up on Lebanese courgettes, spiky they may be but imho they are easily the best courgette for flavour and vigour, much creamier flesh and don't tend to go to a watery mush when cooked. I only grow these now, and eat my way through 100 plus during the season, still got five left for a courgette and pine nut tart tomorrow.

              I think Heywayne is exaggerating just a trifle!

                I can definitely agree Lebanese are darned spiky - I was really surprised, this being the first year I've had any. I didn't even realise courgettes had bad enough spikes to be practically like a thorn!

                But that said they were very good courgettes and I hope I have some seeds left for next year (I need to remember to hand pollinate my squash in future) because I had a courgette nearly every day from just 2 plants (might try just the one next year...) and it only just gave up growing last week with one final medium marrow that popped up suddenly, even after several weeks of frost and the leaves looking fairly dead to me.
