  • Can I sow broken bean seeds??

This may be a silly question but last week I recieved my broad bean seeds which I have sown. However, in the bottom of the packet were several broken up seeds. Can these seeds still be sown or should I just bin them? Most of the are about half bean seeds.

I have done this in the past, some grow and some don't. Providing you've got the bit (at the bottom, I think) where the shoot pops out, you may be OK. See what other grapes say as well.

Wouldn't bother, unless you're really short of seeds. If they don't have the growing point they will only rot.

I agree with both Rustylady and Ann, almost. There is a darker mark on the bean. If that is not complete then it really isn't worth it. The rest of the bean (seed) is just food for the growing tip so again, unless there is a substantial part of it left the bean will not be able to feed it's early roots and will just rot off. Not worth the hassle if you want to be sure of a good crop. Spend an extra quid or two.

Thanks for your comments, in which case I will bin them. Just didn't want to chuck them out and waste them.
