Have any of you grapes ever grown asparagus in containers. I know you're supposed to prepare a permanent bed but I can't really spare the space and I do have some seeds and plenty of large containers.....and I love asparagus.

Asparagus in containers

I think that asparagus likes to send roots out over quite a big area - and getting your spears is all about having some well established (large rooted) plants. They have to be planted over a mound of compost so they have a root run either side - I think this is going to be difficult in a container unless it is about 4 feet across. Dunno if this helps! Mine have been going in a bed on the lottie for quite a few years and I have only just worked out how much they need feeding, watering, space to grow and no weeds around. Next year looks like I will get my first few meals (and really, only a few).Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I doubt they would work in containers to be honest, they need some pretty long rootage.
I'd love to be able to grow them in containers as I am moving around with the RAF for the next long time, but alas I doubt it would be worth it.
I will continue to support my local FM in asparagus buying.aka

I grew mine from seed, started off one seed per 3 and a half inch pot, gradually potted on, and now planted out on the lottie. They're doing well, and looking forward to a crop next spring. You might get away with one plant per very large tub, but you would have to pay careful attention to feeding and watering - is it worth it?

Haven't tried it myself, but this thread's worth a look:
