Is it too late to plant potatoes in tubs/pots?

AHA! Now that my posts are being published (Thank-you Admin), might I ask:


I haven't grown spuds since I was a kid, at least 25 years ago. I grew them in the ground, but I have seen and heard so much about successful tatties being grown in containers.

Now, I must say this in my defence... I have used the 'search' facility but it brings up so many answers, too many to plough through (pun intended).

Could any of you good people give me a link to a thread/video showing the best way to sow potatoes, please?

IIRC, the 'donor' spud needs to have "eyes"... can it be cut or must it be planted whole?

Jeez.... the more I type, the more questions I think of...

Finally, is it too late to grow spuds in tubs/pots?

I can keep them in my garden room (my "poor man's conservatory") from planting through to reaping the crop.

It's up to you whether you attempt to grow them over the winter; some might say go for it whilst others will say don't bother.....

It can do. If you use Advanced Search, you can narrow your criteria. eg, type in Christmas + Potato, or Container + Potato

I really wouldn't bother at this point. They have to be protected from frost, they will need more care than an ICU patient, growth will be slow due to lack of light. I dunno...if it were me I would just wait until after Christmas, buy the new seed sets in January and start in the Spring. Life is too short to have inanimate dependants over the winter!

what, supermarket ones? You can do that, but they aren't guaranteed disease free, and they may not even grow.
However, they are cheap, and I do it

I shove a few small new potatoes from the supermarket into a galvanized dustbin every year about Easter. For coppers, we get a few boilings of very young, new potatoes and if they should be diseased (they never have been) I can simply discard the soil in the container and start again. Wouldn't try before late March though.

I was planning on using little tatties with the "bits" "sprouting" out from them, in tubs of about 18" diameter. I have seen some succeses by others.

The stage of bits sprouting is called 'chitting' by the way.

I've got 2 teenage sons to volunteer....though if its moving targets you want, it would have to be late afternoons (they dont fall out of bed much before 1 pm)

it's more too early than too late,traditional planting day for spuds is around st patricks day (17 mar) if your'e growing in the ground or outdoors in containers.
this is the time to buy seed potatos to chit for 6-8 weeks before planting.
