As Crown Prince is F1, saved seeds are unlikely to come true to the original crown prince. Crown Prince is cucurbita maxima, while Butternuts are cucurbita moschata. Crown Prince is much easier to grow than Butternuts.

On a different note, used up the last of last years marrows last night which had been saved since last autumn - kind of got to the point where it was an experiment to see how long it would last, not as nice as the last one we ate months ago but definitely OK
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have 3 different varieties grown from saved seed and I don't know which is which. What do you think?

Flipping heck! When I read this i thought my CP's were SERIOUSLY behind. I had a sinking feeling, thinking that all my effort was wasted. Mine are a bit larger than a tennis ball, hand pollinated. One didn't work, seems to be the same size. Vines are so long though, gone around my bed both ways now - couple more female flowers are on their way... so hoping i'll get more than 1 CP! The vines must be about 18foot long, each now?!

Did you save the seeds Bren? Only asking cos if you did it then you'll know they're pure and not cross breeds etc whereas if they came from unknown source they could be a 57 varieties job
