Bit late getting to this one but here goes:
My tubs are 31in ones from Instore (30 of em last year but now the turfs down will have to cut back this year)
First year tried Rocket - which didn't - v.poor yield
So second year switched to Home Guard as 1st earlies and they were fantastic and really tasty too.
Always done well with Charlotte (2nd earlies) and King Edward (main crop) my tip would be not to put too many seed pots in the tub (3 - 4 max).
Pink Fir Apple did OK too.
With the 30 tubs and one raised bed 4.5m x 1,5m we are still eating today and expect to do so for some time to come (providing the mice don't chew through all the sacks in the shed) - sacks were free from local seed merchant.
This year's chitting merrily on window sill (until new kittens work out how to get up there). The cats' valet.

Just got back from Jersey with some Jersey Royal seed - never grown 'tatoes before. What type of compost is best to use - I don't have any home made yet as recently moved house. Peat based general purpose, John innes No. 3 etc what do others use?
Thanks.
