Spring Cabbage?

There's a 'what to sow now' board at my allotments and on there it says to sow Spring Cabbage now under cover for planting out in February, is this right? If so, what's a good variety? All the information in catalogues says that they should have been sown a couple of months ago.

There should be no problem with sowing now and planting out in Feb. You will just have to make sure that you plant out during a mild spell and plant out with a reasonable rootball. The idea of planting late autumn is to get the roots established before they go dormant.

I think most people sow in August/Sept and plant out as soon a the plants are big enough. This means that when you are planting out, the weather is more likely to be helpful than not. You can get a sowing in now and plant out in Feb as long as growing conditions continue decent now, and we're not covered in snow or suffering from hard frosts in Feb. The traditional earlier sowing is less subject to the vagaries of the weather.

Some spring cabbages can be sown at almost any time and used as a spring or summer cabbage!..............others may bolt!
