shallots

Am i too late to plant my shallots ???

Not the spring planting variety..........haven't even seen them in the garden centre yet!

Glad you asked this question as I found three sprouting shallots when I was cooking a couple of days ago.

Will they grow in a pot and if so should I just put one shallot to each 10 litre pot? Never grown them before - what do they need to be happy?

Not at all.

You can either plant them in the ground ( might not doo much as the soil will be cold & wet) or plant them into the 15 cell trays that fit into seedtrays and keep them in a cold greenhouse.

I would have thought you could have got away with a 5" - 7" pot. I only use 5 litre ones (9") for growing Chrysanths in!!

Thanks NTG. I use 10 l pots as I get them cheap from Morrisons so have loads spare at the moment.

Will probably use those but only fill them halfway or so.

I'd put two per pot & fill them upas they will hold the moisture better

Do you get the 10" pots cheap because you work there or know someone who does? The reason I ask is because I visited Morrisons today and seen they had cut flowers displayed in 10" pots but as far as I could see there weren't any pots for sale?

I just buy them there. Have a friend who works in the store but never thought to ask her if she can get them cheaper!!! They are usually sold in bundles of around 8 for 99p. They are the buckets which the flowers are displayed in.

I have heard that Tesco and Asda sell their flower buckets too but the stores near me send the buckets back - I suppose it depends who supplies the flowers. I guess if you ask a member of staff they will be able to let you know if they sell them and if so where they are displayed.

Good luck finding them - they are brilliant for doing spuds and things. I grew some carrots in one bucket and we ate them with Christmas dinner - first time I ever grew a carrot!!! Tasty too!
