  • Chickpeas as green manure?

A year or so ago, I bought a big bag of chickpeas from my local Asian supermarket. They were intended for cooking with, and that's what I intended to use them for, but I only used a small amount of them, and a couple of months or so ago, having a bare bed, I decided to try using the rest as green manure, so I broadcast them over the area. I didn't know whether they'd germinate, not being intended for that purpose, but they did, and I now have quite thick foliage over the bed, which will presumably be killed by the first hard frost, when I will dig it in. I assumed that, being a legume, it'd fix nitrgen, but when i had a look at the roots, I couldn't see any of the nodules that are supposed to indicate it, so maybe it doesn't in this country. Still, it's useful compost material. Anyone else tried it, or any other unorthodox green manures?

Good idea... I've got a pack in the cupboard, I might have a go at that in the Spring.

They might not be mature enough yet... or it might be a lack of the bacteria they need to make nodules... can you chuck a bit of fleece over them to give them a bit longer?

Let us know how you get on/what happens (if anything), I'm interested.
