It depends, Seamus - I have got away with it before, using a cloche - but sadly I forgot to note the kind of November / December it was. Always worth trying (but that is my growing motto!)

I sow normal French Breakfast direct in October, for cropping in November (I just pulled some for dinner) or in spring.
No cloches.
