  • Borlotti beans - drying

    Hello all
I too am a borlotti fan, but I am wondering the best way to dry the beans, if I am picking them whilst the pods are still red-ish - rather than dried on the plant. Is it best to shell them and leave to dry, in daylight? I know the pods themselves risk going mouldy.
Please don't suggest I freeze (marvellous idea though, news to me) as freezer is full!
    Many thanks in advance.

We've just shelled the last of our Yin-Yang beans as we were forced to pick them before they were quite ready due to the constant rain meaning they'd never have dried naturally. We spread them on kitchen towel on a table near the radiator and waited for the pods to dry until they were crisp before shelling them. When they were picked one or two were already mouldy, but none have deteriorated since being brought indoors. Fortunately our friends and family are quite used to seeing various GYO projects scattered around our house, so didn't even comment, if your friends are less understanding perhaps you could pop them near the heat in a spare bedroom?
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Don't dry in daylight - they go a shade of brown if you do.

I've dried them successfully by leaving in the pods on newspaper, and depodding when crispy and then leaving somewhere warmish until they 'ding' when they drop and not 'dunk' [you can hear the change when they are dry enough]. Keep some for next year's seeds and then put the others in a glass jar and display proudly.
