Hi I have just returned to this forum after some time away due to work commitments, which have meant I have been unable to spend much time at my allotment over this summer. I did plant a crop of maincrop potatos earlier in the year but have not managed to harvest them. Will it now be to late or do you think there will still be a chance of harvesting some decent spuds? If there is a chance then I will make the time next week to go and dig. Otherwise my plan is to start again early in the new year. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Julie

You really ought to go and dig them up, whatever you end up with - it's really bad practice to leave spuds in the ground. If they had any touch of blight, and you leave them, then you are perpetuating the blight cycle which affects everybody else that grows potatoes....
There's a chance that you'll get some worth eating too - I just finished digging over my potato bed a couple of weeks ago, and found quite a few that I'd missed all still edible

Many thanks for your reply and advice. Must admit I never thought about the blight issue - so thank you. Will go and dig bed over on Sunday and make sure I get rid of them all if not edibleComment

Unless you have really soggy ground- I bet they'll be absolutely fine ( unless they fell victim to blight)
I always find quite a few very healthy spuds the following year when preparing the ground- no matter how carefully the soil has been dug and turned!

Really excited now. Cant wait for Sunday to see whats there. Thats what I love about potatos. You not sure whats there until you start digging!! Will take some piccies and post if the results are good. Anyone seen the weather forecast?. Thank you for all your words of encouragement.Comment

When you think about where potatos grow and the growth habit that they have adopted, which isn't a common one amongst the Solanaceae you'd expect them to be OK in the ground through any winter that wasn't too wet.... that said it looks like the North is getting a biblical downpour at the moment so that would be the thing that potatos aren't designed for......Comment

I am glad to see this question as I started digging over the overgrown end of my lottie todayand found quite a few potatoes, about the size of new potatoes. Now, I have only just got the key and I was told the plot had been empty since earlier this year. Some have a bit of slug damage but I was wondering if they would be edible. Plan on trying them out with tomorrow's roast!Comment
