  • Will frost kill off my Florence Fennel?

I planted a late crop of bulb fennel and it's looking pretty good at the moment - but will is survive a hard frost or should I harvest it. Anyone know how best to keep it?

Ooh no Muckdiva - I have just remembered I have a dozen FF's on the lottie - and there is no chance of protecting them tonight! Hope someone says they tolerate a few degrees of frost!!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

They cannot stand more than a touch of frost as the bulb goes soft. At the first hint of frost, I lift all mine and they will keep for weeks in the fridge crispator, but make sure that they do not freeze.

I collect and dry the seed from herb fennel, but I harvest bulb fennel before it bolts to flower and seed.

Don't give up quite yet - I picked most of mine last week as frosts were threatened - those that were looking a bit tatty and growing oddly as if to go to seed still made made a really nice veg soup.

The is a school of wisdom that says fennel should be picked by the end of November.

If you are putting them in the fridge keep them wrapped in plastic as some dried out left in my fridge in the autumn. Silly me.
