I have tom cuttings from last summer in the unheated greenhouse - if you keep them frost free and grow them hard they should be fine; you might want to get them germinated indoors on a windowsill and then shift them into the greenhouse as soon as you can....with plenty of insulation at night!

Never thought of taking cuttings. Also I forgot to mention, the greenhouse walls are bubblewrapped.

What she said. I didn't see much benefit to starting so early. However, having said that, there's nothing else to do in late December, sooooooo...undecided is the answer!!

You can start them early if you have somewhere suitable to move them on. They won't enjoy a temperature lower than 10C and if they stay on a wndowsill they do get terribly leggy and drawn. I prefer a short strong plant and a couple of months wait.

I took part in the early growing experiment last year and had a bumper crop so will give it ago again this year but will start at the same time as I did last year which was February.
It was strange having tomatoes growing on the window ledge when there was 2ft of snow outside but love the anticipation of a new growing season.

I'm a real conservative when it comes to toms. I once tried starting them in Feb, as opposed to mid-March and found no advantage at all as I move them to a cold greenhouse in late May and the low light levels hold them back anyway.. This year I'm going to put some tumblers in hanging baskets outside for the first time. I just fancy sitting out in my picnic area and reaching up for a small sweet tomato. The only thing is I would like to do that in July/August. Any advice BigMally? Or anyone of course.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

I haven't managed to 'find' my potting station yet - ie. clear the porch out! Must get on with it, I have onions to sow too

The first year I sowed on 2nd Jan and got my first red tom 2nd June.....I have taken some cuttings of some toms from last summer and I have 5 that have survived the autumn and first bit of winter in the grenhouse and are now potted on into single pots and are in the kitchen. One has flowers coming; so I will wait and see what occurs.

will start mine in the propagator in mid march and plant out from there straight into the hanging baskets that will hang in the shed window until going out time
