    early toms

well having had a rush of blood to the head and actually tried to make BREAD- I must be mad - I'm now going to sow some tomato seeds in the heated propagator on a south facing windowsill; I'll keep you posted on how they do

Managed to get a few seeds sown yesterday. Only put a few in as it is a bit of a gamble keeping them going this early in the year. Still I regretted not sowing early last year.Have sown 3 each of Alicante, Marmande, Gerdeners Delight, Garden Pearl and San Marzano. Weather is very cold again and was down below freezing last night. I know it isn't anywhere near as cold as up north but freezing is still freezing.

2nd Green Zebra has now germinated but think sowing the German Red Strawberry toms were a mistake, they are now over 5cm tall.

Had a look through my old seed packets today and found I still have four varieties of tomato seed left from last year and the San Marzano I just bought. As soon as my onions have germinated and my propagator is free I might give an early batch a go!

Does everyone think I will be ok without a propergator but on a sunny windowsill to start now? I was only going to plant about 4-5 plants this early but what does everyone think?

Have a go - I never use a propogator - only a poly bag. Do make sure you bring it off the windowsill at night though, a sill can get very cold. Also check daily and remove the bag when the first one is through or they can get damp and collapse.

Sowed in seed tray today, Roma VF, from the mag. With some potting compost (£1 a sack) leftover from last year.
Put on kitchen window ledge, south facing.

Thanks Flummery. I will give it ago tomorrow. Fingers crossed I will have a couple of early tom plants!

sowed lots of red onion seeds into modules on the 26th December

                      today i sowed:
tomato roma VF (what does the VF stand for?)
tomato gardenperle (had some of these last year and they were nice and tasty)
tmato moneymaker (nearly all got blight but made some lovely green tomato mincemeat so wont be bothered if it happens again)
leek musselburgh (had a wee space so though why not!)
chili pepper jalapeno summer heat (apparently the best pixxa pepper)
                      sweet californian wonder peppers

i never thought to ask - is there a particular compost / compost mix that anyone would want to recommend for these early sowings?

Scottishnewbie, I just use John Innes seed compost.

I had my first seedling emerge. Let's hope it thrives!

                              From Wiki:

While Roma is an open-pollinated variety rather than a hybrid, it has been steadily improved to the point where most Roma tomato vines are fusarium wilt and verticillium resistant

Is this some sort of disease?
