Thanks for the positive (?) comments guys!!!!

So do the majority think it should go in the ground in March or beforehand going on what different types of seeds are in there.

I think we are all agreed that the box is nowhere near a large enough area for all those veg. So I would be inclined to empty each partition out into a plant pot and grow each veg separately and at least give them a fighting chance.

LOL... FAR too sensible... no no no no no... no... NO. NO! RUSSELL, PLANT THE BOX, PLEASE PLANT THE BOX.....! This is not a time to be sensible, you've got to test THE BOX (which the ad claims has all sorts of magic qualities.....):

"Simply plant the entire bulb-laden shebang – biodegradable box and all – get busy with the watering can, and before you know it your borders or tubs will be blooming."

One addition I might suggest is a label or some surface indicator of what's in each box so you can spot them when (if) shoots surface. It's surprising they don't suggest a planting time, bizarre if the same package includes "Winter Spinach" and "Spring Cabbage", this box banishes the seasons... Like t'others I'd say March, perhaps even early April (depending on weather then) in a fairly protected raised sunny bed or even largish container.... Protect, water well, see (and record) what happens...

Whether you subsequently feel empowered to take action under the Trade Description Act remains to be seen....

It says it's a magic grow box...it's not like those things you can buy for kids which you soak in water and they swell to 10x the original size is it??- that'd help with the spacing!!!

I'd follow the instructions and transplant as things grow.
I can see it working well with the bulbs- but most of the contents of the veg box would compete. Why not write to the peeps who produced it and point this out and they may send you some packets of seeds or vouchers for something else- that'd be nice!
(I love the bit about burying the cat)

            yup- get it planted!!!!

Yes, you must plant the box exactly as it says. You have a duty to us curious grapes that want to find out how it turns out!

I agree with others that say March.

There's more information on the box here: The mother of invention

Hey present was more than likely bought by someone who does not grow veg for someone who does. At least they thought and tried so HIP HIP HORRAY to the person who bought it!

Personally I'm not sure on it and would just take the seeds and space them out more to my liking ans say thank you very much for the thoughtful gift!

Well as suggested by you lot and promised by me, I planted the box in March.

It is currently in a spare roadside collection box.

I shall keep people updated as things grow....

er-um...I bought one of these for my daughter-in-law for christmas! I thought it looked like a laugh and to be honest i'm a sucker for silly prezzies at crimbo. If i remember rightly you could pick a winter or a summer one. I'll let you know how she got on. my advice is just go for it!!!!

The bloke I'm using the polytunnel with got a herb one for Christmas, plant the whole thing etc.

He planted it last week, so will let you know if anything happens.
Same deal, push out the cardboard bits, bury the whole thing, water well.

Any thoughts what you'll be buying the gift-giver in return this Christmas?

                                Magic Beans?
