All ready for next season

Well I have now had delivery of all my seeds that I ordered and I am looking forward to the next season.
Carrots - Sweet Candle
Leeks - Improved Pendle, Welsh Seedling and some Pot leeks.
Lettuce - Sunny and Sandrine
Squash - Kabocha
Peas - Show perfection.
Potatoes - I am going to grow around 120 varieties just for a bit of variation
Cabbage - About 12000 of them for my sheep to eat

So what has everyone else got planned?

My leeks are already 12 inch high but I managed to kill a few off by over watering. Everything was alright with the leeks until it went wrong

Haven't totally decided but I think I need to pick your brains about tatties Can you grow mini-tubers (heritage) in potato planters? I will grow Foremost and Charlotte definately for eating this year.

Hmm...well I have to admit I was looking out of our bedroom window at the potager (bit of field) this afternoon, considering how much to enlarge it by for the coming year!
I'll be getting quite a lot of new seed this year as I've been a good gal and been using up old seeds for the past couple of years.
I'll be making my lists/ rotations etc in a couple of weeks and buy my seed when I'm back in the UK at the end of Jan ( packing up the house and into storage)- so I need to be organised by then.

Frostyfreckle just treat the mintubers like seed potatoes. They will grow anywhere that you can grow ordinary seed potatoes. The only difference is that minitubers have never been grown outdoors and are 100% disease free.
Nicos I hope to have more than 120 varieties so that I can add them to my website as a source of information. I once grew 18000 cabbage but that was alot of work.

If you want me to look out for any French spuds I'd be happy to keep my eyes posted!

I will keep you in mind Nicos. I will try and get as many UK spuds this year as I can.
They will all be grown in my polypots and then I will record everything about them as they grow and are harvested.
I will then be able to write another potato book for the following year with loads of lovely pictures.

I just ordered my seed spuds, except for the Sarpos. (I'll be getting them from a potato day I think).
I bought a few packets of seed before Christmas, notably fresh sweetcorn seeds as I had a miserable failure with them this year. Then I've had lots of peas and some beans in seed swaps and my Secret Santa parcel. I might buy some fresh tomato and cucumber seeds, and maybe a few brassicas as they are all running low.

I'm going to order onion sets probably at the end of January.As for potatoes-I know which ones,I don't know when to order them

Hey Tattieman - I recently bought my first bag of spuds since the spring, and they were called sommat like Arvo? I bought them from my Butcher, and he'd never heard of them either. They are whites, not a lot of flavour, but great as Roasties and absolutely fab as Jackets - he was told they aren't that great as chips, but we haven't tried them yet as we don't eat a lot of chips.

Have you heard of them?

Sarpos are a thing of the past, the way forward is Setanta. Better blight resistance and superior taste with it being bred from the famous Rooster.

I did, yes Tattieman I don't think Roosters are anything to write home about, they're not as good as Desiree for my palate I only have the Sarpos to make sure of getting some maincrops... And they do roast fantastically well

Cheers SarzWix. Setanta are going to be hugely popular as they are excellent for chipping, roasting and baking etc etc. The taste of them is just heavenly. Setanta will be the no1 choice for the organic grower and they have great storeability. I had some as roasties yesterday and they were superb. Another tasty one is Camelot.
