I really wish I had more room to grow more varieties, but I'll still be growing 6, there's only me who eats them in our house, but I do make tomato chutneys, and sauces for the freezer when I get that inevitable glut.

Hi Ginger ninger, have you tried to make dried tomatoes? They are lovely!

            Drying tomatoes

            Hello,
I normally select my Roma or money-maker tomatoes for this process. I simply cut them lengthwise in half, add some salt, then stack them on the metal wire racks in the oven in a way they do not touch each other, cut side up. Then set the oven temperature close to 100C just for drying rusks and let them be. I normally test them later to see that they are rubbery or like fruit leathers but nor hard and dried out. Then I let them cool when they are done and fill glass jars with them. I either can leave them as is or add lovely olive oil with some added spices like peppercorns. In summer as now, I have a square frame with bird mesh covered where I lay them out in full sun with a insect net covering them. I do pumpkin and fruit in the same way.

I prefer dried tomtoes to fresh ones. I have started to grow San Marzano toms just for drying. I even invested in a food dryer.

Count me in Jilly! I've been a mad tomatophile for so long, I've lost count!

It was me who coined that word, tomatophile. I've been a writer in my job with the civil service for more than 20 years so I love to compose. In fact, that technically makes me a wordsmith, the definition of which is 'a maker and user of words'. Glad you liked it Jilly!

                        G'Day Again Jilly!

I'm presuming you meant 'Tomato Friends' in your post heading? We can find 'fiends' anywhere so there's no need to seek them out! LOL
