  • Garden Domes!!

Wonder if I could make one of these from pallet wood for the lottie?

Particularily fancy the 30 sided Do Deca dome!

I'm sure that will be a walk in the park for the Snadger, we're talking about the guy who made a burner out of a gas bottle.....easy peasy.

I'm sure you'd have made a time machine out of a Delorean if it hadn't been done before

Hi Snadge - I have lived in one of these structures - for a summer - on the Mississippi!!!
They are the most economical surface area for a contained space!! (And I was a hippy at the time!!!)
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Wow I love them, thank you for the link.

If you have the skills, and I think you do, I say go for it. Look forward to seeing the photos

Looks very similar to the structure Ollie was playing around with (only his was a little more technical...........)

I reckon you could easily knock one of those up. To my eye, the rough structure is very similar to half a football. The technical structure of the leather footballs I refer to use a icosahedrons geometry.

Now, rather than plough through the associated mathematics, I would find a small child with such a leather football, scold him excessively and send him to him bed, then steal the football. Cut the football's lower third away. You could then disassemble the football, marking each segment and keeping a record of its position. The result would be a scaled form for each segment.

Simply scale up and build the elements, using struts to reinforce. These will also create the triangle elements in the mix of pentagons and hexagons. Bolt together and enjoy.

Of course, where the various pentagons and hexagons meet, the above method does include 'doubling up' of the external struts. This would be eliminated by mapping the total design as a 2D object and identifying the nuclear panels which then could be omitted, all apart from their struts. These would obviously require some bracing, but the final look would be enhanced.

If it keeps snowing, I might just draw up a plan for such a structure!

I was going to say the same thing. I'm still working on the theory, but only because it's too cold to get physical!

Once my beds are built (or if the snow continues), I might try to build a model using the football theory, just to see how it goes.

Far too hard to explain, I'll no-doubt post pictures once I start building it.

Easiest way to ascertain any length is to create either a scaled or full size mock up of that particular elevation, or as I do, measure three times and cut once!
