Was going to buy shallots from Wilko`s this weekend but have just bought some cooking shallots reduced in the Co-op & wondered whether I can plant these instead. As I grow my veg in my garden & not an allotment I haven`t got room to make a mistake. Advice please.
Trish you can grow them, however bear in mind they've not been treated/ from disease free stock. Some people have grown garlic, shallots potatoes etc this way for years with no problems, however others have decimated entire allotment sites by bringing in disease. The risk is yours to weigh up the pros and cons thereof.

Thanks for the replies. Have made 2 large jars of pickled shallots, am going to make beef bourguiginonne tomorrow and am going to try growing 10 of them but still buy some in Wilkos.
Not bad for 1.20. I`ll keep my fingers crossed.
How much was the asparagus from Wilko's? I need asparagus.
Hi Bex - the asparagus was three plants for 1.98 - it is shooting so I may need to get it potted on till I can make a space in the asparagus bed on the lottie - going to check the lottie tomorrow if it stops raining.
Funnily enough I found myself in Wilkos again today!
This time I managed to walk out with:
Lawn Rake (I have a load of leaves on the lawn so I'll get out there tomorrow and rake em up and bag em for composting) - about 3.50
Knee pads - 3 ish.
That was it but I will be going back to get one of their Wheelbarrows - the only reason I didn't get one was that I don't think I would have got it in the car with the other shopping in there -85L barrow starts at around 28 I think (or 30).
Also will probably get one of the bin things for burning stuff in (but that can wait I guess).
Haven't been to Wilko since well before Xmas, will have to make a serious effort in the near future to get down there now the gardening stuff is back on the shelves.
Went in today & bought a couple of large gravel trays & absorbant cloths. I'm gonna try using them as a capillary trough for my seedlings.

Hi all, I bought Wilko's shallots last year, aswell as Fothergills ones, well, the Fothergills ones were awful (just like that Tayberry I bought off them too, weedy useless little thing that hasn't grown at all in 2 years!!) Anyway, the Wilkos shallots were the best I've ever grown, huge bulbs and plenty of them, I'm going again tomorrow to buy some more for this year!

Good Grief, off to Wilko's I go, I was looking at paying about 14 quid for 10 crowns
I'll definately be paying wilkos a visit now. Thanks for the info Jeanied
OMG - I went to Wilko's last night and I bought...
1 blackberry, 1 grapevine (in honour of you lovely peeps), 9 asparagus crowns, a net of shallots and a packet of Brussel Sprout seeds all for the grand total of 12.73.
Today I bought seed potatoes 5 in each bag, Pink Fir Apple, Charlotte and Nicola (never heard of that particular strain, but it does you good to try something new.) 97 pence for each bag. Amazing! The equivalent in Wyevale at the weekend would have cost about three times that much.
I too succumed to the pull of Wilkos. I bought two bags of Pink Fir Apple seed spuds @ 97p each as well as two Blueberry bushes. I bought one Blueberry last year & it is going great guns with plenty fruit picked from it in its 1st year too. Last year i also bought Rooster seed spuds and they faired much better than the expensive ones i bought from Dobies! I was very impressed with the fruit selection they had too: Blueberries, blackberries, red currants, black currants, gooseberries, grape, kiwi, fig, lemon, orange - possibly others too that i can't recall & all for 3 each. Although the citrus plants had shed their leaves, the others were all healthy little things.
Have just got myself 9 asparagus crowns Thing is it does not say which asparagus it is on the packet Does anyone know which it is?? Also its starting to sprout Do i need to get this in ASAP or will it be ok for a week or so??
