Hello!

I posted on here last year about growing season and it's crept up on me again this year. We've been really lax about the garden as it got into autumn and we needed to work on the house.

So is it too late to dig in manure and would it be ok not to dig over the beds? We don't have raised beds (OH thinks it's poncy nonsense and I can't convince him otherwise).

And we've got some garlic (not put in yet).

had loads last year when it was my first year and worried now it's all going wrong for the second year!!

Last year I put my garlic in in March and got a fairly decent crop.
I haven't manured any beds yet as I didn't want any goodness to be leached away by the rain, so am planning to do it this weekend, weather permitting.
It's still early, go for it.

I don't think it's ever too late to add manure - it just depends on what you're growing. Carrots are a prime example of a crop that doesn't do well in freshly manured ground, but rhubarb loves it.

Garlic needs some good frost to "split" the cloves, but I think we've still plenty of that to come, so panic ye not.

I haven't been able to get to my plot for months now and I know I'll be on the back foot from day one - there's the apple tree to prune, beds to lay out, pond to de-weed, the area around the base of the tree to clear, and so on, and so on.

If there wasn't anything to do though - where would the fun be?

You'll be fine - the growing season's a longer time than we sometimes realise.

Don't panic BK In my first year growing I didn't get anything in the ground until May!

I'd say spread the manure over and let the weather/worms do the work (you'll end up with raised beds eventually! ) You could always temporarily cover the top of the beds with old carpet/cardboard/newspaper/sacks/whatever, to keep the worst of the rain off.

Really, my best advice (and I'm definitely no expert) is to tackle it one step at a time.

Also, if you don't get around to sowing, you can always buy plug plants or ask on here - I am guilty of always sowing too many of everything, and I'd rather give the surplus away, than compost them.
