Surplus Seedlings?

Every year my school asks me if I have any spare plants for the fete, and I never have. They don't understand that it takes more than a week's notice to get something growing and saleable!

So, this is a heads up really, to say if you are likely to have any spare seedlings, rather than compost them, offer them to your local school for their Easter or Summer fetes.

I'm going to pot mine up into yogurt pots so that I don't lose any pots (tightwad).

I think I'll do extra tomato, chilli and sunflowers. Rather than full growing instructions, I think I'll perhaps put on a sticky label directing them to the Grapevine

As TS says - if you want to donate you need to get those extra few going asap.

If you don't have connections to a school - then why not think of donating your surplus to a local charity shop? There is clearly someone in my area giving tomatoes, beans, peas etc - even small pots of sweet peas and so on - I think I'll set aside a few to let them make some cash and plant them up in pot noodle plastic pots. Even if they only sell for 25p each it'll be good cash towards their good cause. For some it is simply the seedling stage which is of particular interest and maybe this is what they get their kick out of and/or perhaps no room to grow on.

You could even put them at the front of your property on a 'free to good home!' notice. Your neighbours will be delighted with any freebies you can offer I'm sure.

Someone close to me has a few cucumbers, beans, toms for sale at ridiculously low prices which I guess s/he sells the 'ready' surplus to provide some seed money for next year's replacements.

We grow extras to sell for our village Britain in Bloom funds - those that we don't plant around the village, that is.

I always have extras as despite the fact that I almost always get nearly 100% germination with toms etc I still sow about twice as many as I need. Can't throw them away as that would be murdering my babies but tend to give them to friends and neighbours or cram them into my plot as best I can.
