  • Allium Spacings

I found this when rooting about the ether, as you do when you have spare time on your hands.
Its a spacing guide to alliums and is good for both traditional rows or bed systems.

    Onions
in rows 25cm (10in) apart. For medium-sized onions, space the sets 10cm (4in) apart in the row; a wider spacing of 15cm (6in) will give larger bulbs.

On a ‘bed system’, space onions 15cm (6in) apart each way.

    Shallots
in rows 25cm (10in) apart, with 15cm (6in) between bulbs.

On a ‘bed system’, plant them 18cm (7in) apart each way.

    Garlic
in rows 30cm (12in) apart, with 13-15cm (5-6in) between cloves.

On a ‘bed system’ plant them 18cm (7in) apart each way.

You can obviously jiggle the distances a bit to suit your growing space and conditions.

very useful piglet - how far apart do you plant out cluster sown onions? I put in a group of 4 or so (from 6 seeds) in a deep bed 1 ft apart
      SSx
not every situation requires a big onion

I only grew a few that way SS and put them 10-12" apart each way so although the spacings are slightly bigger you get more onions per station and hence a bigger yield.

I spaced my multi-sown module clusters of 4 or 5 seedlings about 9" apart in my raised bed last year, and I planted them in the pattern of how the dots appear on a dice for a 5, which is generally known as planting in an 'offset' pattern. I got a wonderful crop of different sized onions.
I'll be repeating this again this year.
Piggie, I think your avatar is too skinny and needs fattening up.
