  • choosing potato tubers - what do i look for?

    Can any grapes help?
I'm off to buy my potato seeds tomorrow. What do i look for when buying them? What size? Do they need to be firm? Any advice would be appreciated.
    Also any reccommended varieties

    Thanks.

I always buy smaller seed potatoes because I get more for my money! Don't buy them if they are soft and wrinkled.

Alan Romans suggests the best size is about that of a hens egg. As Madame Jay suggests, they should be firm and look clean and wholesome.

I choose them medium egg size - that way you can chit them in egg boxes with no squashing!!

Also, I like nice shaped ones - maybe I hope that if I plant a nice shaped spud then I will get similar in return - probably a daft idea!!!

My late Father always reckoned that the tubers should be the size of a good chicken egg.

Thanks everyone. Purchased my tubers with confidence today. Had trouble finding the Pink Fir Apple seeds which looked like eggs though! LOL. Sounded like i knew what i was doing as well! The first earlies are now chitting on the windowsill in egg boxes!
