I tried Avon Resistor as they were advertised as shorter and ok for clay soil. Taste-wise excellent but they have forked. I'm using a deeper bed this year.

I have grown Gladiator for the past two years and they have proven to be reliable. I grow mine in containers and raised beds but am sure I read somewhere they are also okay in heavier soil.
I grew Gladiator last year - they were (are, I'm still harvesting them) huge. Some have a bit of canker showing but they taste very nice. This year I'm going to try Avonresistor for a change.
I planted Gladiator last year with mixed results. I'd heard how difficult they were to get going and an old boy on the plot mentioned starting them of on damp tissue paper in a sandwich bag then planting out the viable ones. In April I also just planted some out directly on the plot. Both methods worked but in the ones started in bags almost all were horribly forked. The other ones were smaller (due to being planted closer together) but all were perfect.
Last years Gladiators had an excellent germination rate, and grew huge but i didn't rate the taste much. This year i have chosen parsnip 'white king' from kings seeds as they are reputed to have outstanding flavour. Flavour is what makes a good parsnip for me, not bulk.
I grew White King last year and they've been very tasty and incredibly sweet (still some in the ground), not huge but a reasonanble size although the last few I pulled up had signs of canker which was a shame.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Thanks for that Alison!
I spent an age reading through catalogues until i felt i had picked the right verity. Taste is what i were after, thank you for confirming my choice .
