Gladiator for me too, lovely big and sweet roots, and i'm still pulling (digging) them up and no canker thankfully. I just made a v shaped trench with the spade and filled it with compost, watered well, sowed the seed and covered with more compost, and had a good germination. Doing the same this year.

Can you eat parnsips with canker? Do you just cut it out? (is it like scab on spuds?)

I grew Gladiators last year with great success. One of them was a massive 20oz. most were between 12-16 oz in weight! Very tasty too.

I've grown Gladiator and also Countess. I think Gladiator was the better parsnip for size, taste and canker resistance.

At the risk of being boring, another vote for Gladiator here . I started mine of on kitchen roll, and put them into loo roll pots. Only had one forked one, so they must have been happy!

Having said that I may try a different variety this year... am tempted by White King now, having seen these posts - the gladiator were, if anything, just a bit too huge!

With this being my first season with a lottie I've never grown Parsnips before but glad that Gladiator is one of the varieties I am sowing.

I also have Tender and True. Has anyone tried these before?

I had about 4 failed attempts at germinating parsnips until TS recommended Gladiator and I was encouraged by other grapes to "have another go". I did, they germinated and I'm happy and proud to say that they were on the table for Christmas Dinner and I'm still digging them up now. I'm sowing Gladiator again, but I'm going to wait until April when the ground is a bit warmer and sow direct. I think I was a bit too eager last year.

Never grown Gladiator but think that's mainly as I try to avoid F1s as much as possible and enjoy the challenge of not using them even if I'm not intending to seed save.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
