Moon planting experiences

Hi there,

A bit of a strange question for my first thread, but I am trying to find out what experiences people have had with moon planting? Has anyone tried it? and if so, where the results as good as everyone says they can be?

Something I've been meaning to try. It can be quite complicated, but you can get some good books on it from the local library. Unfortunately at the moment I am working full time and have enough trouble getting good gardening days when I'm free to work so just planting and sowing when I can for now. Roll on retirement! Please let us know if it really does make a difference - I suppose to make sure you should do "control" sowing and planting.

The French are very into Jardinez avec la Lune and I have a diary which tells me what I SHOULD be doing each day, including days when I should not do any gardening. I am going to give it a try this year and see if the results are better than last.

My only experiance is that cutting an 80ft privet hedge on a waning moon meant that it didn't need cutting for 6 weeks but cut on a waxing moon it had to be cut again after 4 weeks

Will do. I am going to try a controlled planting of Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Tomato, Basil, and Coriander. I'll keep a diary of how it develops through the year, and I will use the planting guide at www.the-gardeners-calendar.co.uk and I have ordered the "Moon Gardening" by RJ Harris. That should keep me busy for the next year

Perhaps a naive question (I'm still new at this) but is Moon Gardening the same as Biodynamic gardening?

I've been trying to get hold of the 'The Biodynamic Sowing and Planting Calendar' for 2007 but WHSmith tell me that although it's listed on their order system as in stock it has now gone out of print.

Can anybody recommend any other books/calendars/web sites for moon/biodynamic gardening (if indeed they are the same thing)?

I've heard people talking about sowing/planting wall charts but haven't been able to find any. Does anyone know if they really exisit?

The one I have is called Jardinez avec la Lune and I think it is quite good. I got it from the local Garden Center but they are widely available. It depends on your level of French. Mine is rubbish so I just chose the one that could understand.

I've used Gardening and Planting by the Moon by Nick Kollerstrom for the past two years - albeit intermittently! I always start off with good intentions, then realise I've missed the roots planting day and the next time one comes round I'll be away so either I can sow stuff on a 'flower' day and cross my fingers, or sow stuff up to three weeks later than I originally planned... it tends to go pot later in the season.

Plus there are several methods of 'moon gardening'. Some work on whether the Moon is waxing or waning, some on which particular phase of waxing or waning and others on which constellation she's in. And if you select the sidereal zodiac option, it gives you the same calendar that you get in Nick Kollerstrom's book. So no need to buy the newest copy.
