Anyone grown Chicco Rosso Cherry Tomatoes?

I haven't looked at this site for months as it's been too flippin' cold for me to think about gardening.

However, whilst in Lidl today, I noticed they had their racks of veg seeds out so picked up a packet of Chicco Rosso seeds.

There are only 8 in the packet for 49p so I assume they must be quite expensive.

Have any other members tried growing these and if so what is you opinion of them?

Now I had better start reading up on everything again as last year was my first growing year so I have still got a lot to learn.

Checked on a tomato variety site - chico is a pear shaped tom, growing to about 36" height. I assume rosso is a deepe red variety? What does it say on the packet?

Not a lot but they don't look pear shaped in the photo on the packet.

All it says on the reverse is that germination takes 12 - 18 days, the variety gives good yields, best suited for outdoors and under glass, resistant to most of the tomato diseases etc.

Hybrid implies (but doesn't state) F1. They won't come true to seed then. Not that that matters but it explains the price! Maybe chico and chico rosso aren't that similar?

So when they say Hybrid on these Lidl ones it means these could in fact be F2, F4 etc etc?

No, it'll be an F1 I'm sure. If you keep selecting out to several generations from an F1 you get a new strain. They don't tend to sell the further hybrids.

I grew these last year. Lovely gorgeous cherry toms. They grow up to a 50p size (diameter).

Thanks, I think I will just grow these, Sungold and the Suncherry Premium ones that I have.

I raise tomatoes from seed every year in Scotland - I grow some myself in an unheated greenhouse and give some to my parents who grow them outdoors -their garden is more sheltered.

I always grow Sungold which excels but have tried quite a few red cherry varieities with more limited success until discovering Chico Rosso in Lidl last year - which matched the Sungold for yield and exceeded it for flavour. Growing it again this year and will let you know how I get on. Would be good to hear your feedback too. Happy growing!

How viable are tomato seeds? I've noticed offerson them appearing all over - will they last for a couple years?
