Just bought some small onion bulbs...

Not sure if this was the right thing to do, they are small - say about 1-1.5cm in diameter, if that.

Do you normally grow from seed, or bulbs?

They were quite cheap from B&Q - saw them and thought I'd give them a go, a mix of red and white jobbies!

Sounds good I always like mixtures. I have tried seeds and bulbs but find bulbs easier, at least you can see where you have put them

The little bulbs, known as Sets, have been treated (heat treated if I remember) so they don't just rush to seed when you plant them. Sets are much easier to grow from than seeds but there isn't usually as much choice of varieties. I always grew from sets, but have recently tried seed. I now do a bit of both!

I only grow them from sets too- find the seeds too much of a bind so early in the season

I like long red Firenze onions which I find very easy to grow from seed and they have a wonderful aromatic taste (make lovely onion gravy)

Onions are totally hardy. Get them outside, so long as your soil isn't waterlogged or frozen

I had a really poor result with Red Electric sets last year but thought it was just a one off. Bought them again this year and about 3/4's haven't come up. To counter this I'm experienting with some sets in the greenhouse in modules, Red Baron and Red Karmen and I'm growing Red Baron from seed too.

So im starting them off in modules,but I needed to get my cloche sorted out this weekend so i can get other stuff sorted

I often do both but to be honest I prefer sets. I just pop them in the ground and leave them too it. Great.
