  • My PSB and Dwarf Kale Need a Boost...

I'm thinking they might apreciate a bit of a mulch.
On the menu I have a choice of:

Homemade compost - a bit heavy on the wood shaving/ bunnny droppings - might be a bit acid?
Limitless supplies of freshly gathered seaweed.
    Blood, Fish and bone meal.
    Pelleted chicken pooh.

The beds previously contained potatoes , so had had their quota of WRM early in the season, and I limed the beds prior to planting my brasiccas.
    Grape advice gratefully received!

    Why?

they naturally won't grow much in this weather anyway, it being so cold and all, but given a bit of light & warmth they'll soon be getting a new growth spurt on & will provide lots of new greens ... and then they'll go to seed a couple of days after that

Two Sheds is right. What I am interested in is freshly gathered seaweed. Is it Sea Kale? BFB is a slow release so if you want to scatter nutrients around then use that. But to quote TS 'Why?'
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Ok, keep your hair on! Just thought that as they come back into growth a spot of something extra might be appropriate, but if you don't think so, I will save my energy for something else.
As far as seaweed is concerned I was under the impression from other post that it was something that you can use as a mulch in its fresh, uncomposted form. Just wondered if it was a beneficial mulch for Brasiccas.

The Victorian way would be to apply a handful of Sulphate of Ammonia (a high nitrogen inorganic fertiliser) around the base of each plant. I've done this before to great effect, especially with spring cabbage to 'kick start' them into growth.
Now that I grow organically, and all of the fertilisers you mentioned are organic, so you probably do the same,..............I would opt for a hand full of chicken pellets around each plant without touching the stem in case it scorches them.
Thats what I plan doing with mine this year because my nettle and comfrey tea barrel was blown over in the high winds we had earlier in the year.
The blood and fish portion of BFB would give a similar affect and the bone portion would give some long term slow release nitro as well as phosphate to aid root growth.

My PSB has leapt into life this last week without any encouragement from me! It was, however, mulched with seaweed last autumn. I swears by it - but then I would, wouldn't I? There's masses of it just two steps from the garden.

Sorry. Feeling a bit frazzled. See general chit chat.

Thanks for the advice will probably go with the chicken pooh seeing as my life seems to be full of it.

I've just given my PSB and spring cabbages etc a feed of homemade liquid chicken manure.

Last year it worked wonders so doing the same this year and I may give them so more in a couple of weeks.
