  • Growing exotic screwpine

    Hi all,

I really miss fresh screwpine leaves. It's called Pandanus amaryllifolius and used for scenting cooking and I love the smell.

I know it's a really big task as it normally grows in a hot humid climate but wondering if anyone has attempted to grow them or am I too silly to even think about trying to grow them?

How would I go about getting some to try, if I'm not too discouraged by the hardened gardeners?

    Thanks all

As it's usually only grown in Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Sri Lanka. I'm pretty sure you would have your work cut out with this one. You may be able to keep it alive for a while as a house plant but it needs copious amounts of water and doesn't like the direct midday sun.
If you still want to have a try, i'm sure if you google it, you may be able to source some plant cuttings from somewhere.
    Good luck with this one.

Hi I brought back a plant from Malaysia about 3 years ago. I keep it in the house, initally growing it in water, changing the water every few weeks but have now potted it. It grown larger and I 'harverst' the leaves whenever I need them. However, they have not produced any suckers that I can propogate new plants with and am wondering if anyone has managed to get their plants to do so

Not sure if you will get an answer to your question as Lilianthornstrom hasn't visited the site since December 2013 and the original thread was started 5 years ago. You could try a PM and you might get a response. Either way I think there are all sorts of restrictions about importing plant material so you'd want to check carefully before attempting it.
