I am now faced with filling my 3 raised beds with something. I assume I need topsoil? If so, can someone advise me on what to buy and where to buy it and how much I might need? 3 beds 110x390cms 8 Inches depth
I see you're like me Wizer, sizes in mm & depth in Inches!
Does your local council do a green waste scheme, if so see how much to buy some back.
If they don't try yellow pages and there will be people in there advertising it won't be cheap though. Failing that check the local paper/post office or have aword aounrd the neighbourhood and see if some ones building a fish pond, you can save them the cost of a skip.

Building sites are a good bet for topsoil - they remove loads before digging foundations etc. However if you have to buy some, try and make sure it is screened (seived) to remove large turfs, stones etc otherwise you don't know how much rubbish you'll pull out of your load.
One other pointer - If the soil is comig off a large heap, take it from the middle of the face - not the top as that's where all the weeds be lurking and lying in wait

Thank chaps, i'll have to have a hunt around. I got a feeling it will be another big expense, might be better to dig it out of the surrounding plot for now.
A cheeper but slower method would be to use what soil you've got and just add loads of Muck/spent Mushroom compost/or your own compost, it'll take a while but you soon get up to the desired depth.
