Top Soil Suppliers

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone could recommend a top soil supplier? I've had to dig probably 2' depth out of each bed I have now, due to the amount of slate/hacksaw blades, plastic window spacers, stones, slate chippings, body parts etc..

Filling it all with compost is going to be more expensive than I thought - plus i've read mixing top soil with compost will help it hold onto moisture better.

I'm in South Wales, but most ones I've been are the likes of B&Q (which according to my father in law supply shite - as they had a load of failed produce when using the top soil from them in some beds), or perhaps Travis Perkins/ jewsons.

My local garden centre recommend brown soils, but can't get through to them, plus their site is a bit.. rubbish

Other option I have is to move soil from the side garden (going to be levelled out anyway) - but its taking forever so i'd rather just get it done!

I've used these suppliers before and have been very happy with the soil.

But a bit far from you?!

Found some more local on Yell's site..

£75 for 3 tonnes delivered, not sure if that's good or bad, everywhere else is busy or not answering!!!

That's a great price. I found a farm about 18 miles away and it's £45 tonne collected. Not sure I can get a bag that size in the boot let alone the weight on the back axle. They do it in 40l bags but same problem and would mean several trips. I'll have to try Yell and see if there's anyone else.

Also look out for spent mushroom compost which is often cheaper than multi purpose. Sometimes has chalk in it and is not supposed to be used for potatoes. Cheapest multi I've found is in my local Wickes though I'm going to try haggling at the local warehouse type gardening supplier and see if he'll give me a discount for quantity that I can call off as I need it.

My local supplier does 1ton for £23 but I think that's if you collect. It's good stuff.

You might struggle to get a tonne in the car any which way. My little 600kg capacity trailer managed a tonne though, whoops did they really dump that much on it?

You could try any Turf supplier, (Rolawn for example) they nearly all supply topsoil too, and will deliver. Round here our local Skip company will deliver hardcore, type 1 and topsoil in 6- or 8-yard skips, or lorry loads. Could be worth a ring round!

Rowlands seem quite expensive!

I may give the council a ring too to see if they can do anything..

I may be able to get away with 1 tonne, as I have a *load* of compost in the garage (all different sorts) and some soil I can move (I dont want to move 3 tonnes of the stuff, over a wall, bucket by bucket ). So if they can do that for £25, see how I get on.

Rowlands do that all organic stuff, I'd love it, but well expensive!

Soil is so variable that I would always inspect or ask for a sample before buying.

However even poor subsoil can be improved with composted greenwaste or mushroom compost so all is not lost.
One company near us ''manufacures'' top soil by mixing different soils, sand, sewage sludge and compost - said to be good

I buy from a firm which supplies gravel and hardcore, they have huge mountains of stuff from large building jobs. Their top soil is £10 / tonne collected, £150 / 10 tonne delivered
