Don't know if anyone else does this and I am a newbie to all of this (well, I was last year).
Because you don't know if you have duff seeds or not I like to germinate them first before planting them on into compost. I hate the idea of sitting there not knowing if it is going to grow or not.
I cut a rectangle of kitchen roll, dampen it, place a couple of seeds on it, fold the piece over on itself (write what the seeds are first on it before you wet it), put it in a marg or spread tub and put it under the sink with the lid on.
It only takes about 4 days for them to germinate (took the purple tomatillos 6 days) and I have had a 99% germination rate by doing it this way.
Once there is a big enough root to handle I transfer it to the progagator module.
Only thing is, if the root has got quite big you have to carefully pull it out of the kitchen roll as it threads itself through the weave.
Below are the tomatillo seeds which had been in there for 7 days (they had germinated a couple of days ago but didn't have time to go and sort out the compost).
