could I move my peppers

I have peppers growing on my window in my front bedroom but it is getting full, with more peppers to go on soon, these peppers are just starting to get their second leaves. I also had dahlias grown from seed , in trays. Last Friday I moved the dahlias down to the polytunnel and left trays in there with clear plastic lids on them and they seem to be doing ok.

To get to the point could I do this with the peppersI could stand the pots in trays and cover with double clear plastic lids as I haved spare, do you think it would be enough. It has been reported by another tunnel owner that when it is sunny temps are reaching 30

Well, therein lies the problem. if the sun comes out it will not only be 30c in the tunnel but probably oven temp under the 'double plastic cover'.

Consistency is important so without ventillation during the day and heat at night growing during the winter is going to be very difficult in a poly-tunnel during a winter like this.

Warmth loving stuff like Toms and peppers....no chance. They will get knocked back to the point that those sown in March will overtake them.

Ps; sorry to be a downer - but it would be a shame to lose your seedling due to over enthusiasm/ optomisim. Thing like leeks, brassicas, parsley etc should be ok to move and make space.

I put my chillis and peppers out in the greenhouse the other day... I sectioned some off with bubble wrap. They seem to be doing ok, fingers crossed they will be.... I had too many for the window cill

It's getting to -3 in my greenhouse at night, even though it's been up to 19 on the sunniest day so far. I would't risk it with tender stuff. Peas and broadies are out there.

There is no way I'd risk my chillies and peppers in the greenhouse or polytunnel at this time of year. The very baby ones are in the conservatory and the potted on ones have made it to the conservatory but that's as far as they'll go until about April / May.

I will have to wait , but I have putter some pepper seed in trays in the tunnel when these start growing then may be the time to take the peppers down.

Sunday during the day my tunnel reached 29c and on my return monday morning it had recorded a temp of -3.

I'm afraid I agree with everyone else, the temp would fall so much at night you would loose them and then they could fry if you didn't lift of the plastic covers during a sunny day.

Maybe a mini plastic greenhouse for a home so put them in during the day and bring in at night.I usually do this with my tom' and peppers to harden them off before I put them in the PT although not quite this early in the year

They need a consistent high temperature to germinate. They are unlikely to come through in a poly tunnel at this time of year.

scrap that! I just checked on them and the leaves are starting to curl up! So I've chosen the best 2 of each variety and have bought them back indoors! Lesson learnt

That's the only trouble with sowing a lot of tender stuff this early - you have to have somewhere with a steady 5c at least and preferably 10c,plus plenty of light. I've put back my sowing plans this year because it costs so much to heat the little greenhouse in the back garden when it's this cold

Well last saturday I took a pot of 5 peppers and a pot of 4 Tomatoes (Black Cherry) down to the tunnel, one week on they are ok and looking healthly, may have to bring home wednesday as nighttime temp could be minus 3.

The the last week everything in my tunnel seems to have had a growth spurt is this because it is milder and days are longer but what a difference in a week.

another plot holdholder with tunnel says that nighttime temp were 4 don't know if this average, but a week before that they were minus 2 to 3


I am always testing the boundries so these could fail anytime

The plants are holding their own, peppers slightly bigger , Tomatoes growing well, I am going to plant into their own pots this weekend and take others down from the window sil to make room for all the others I have sown.

It might make a difference that all the forcasts from the met have been wrong, we have a weather warning in for sunday and it was dry and sunny.
