Celeriac germination

Hi guys

Was quite keen to grow these this year so bought meself some seeds from Simply Seeds - think there was 30 in the packet. Put them on windowsill in heated propagator and only x3 have emerged which is a bit disappointing. My question is - is this normal or are the other seeds likely to emerge shortly. I planted them about 10 days ago I think.

They are very slow, mine have only showed one seedling after about a fortnight

Slow..and once planted out very , very demanding for feed and water!!

Hi Alison, think you will be fine. I have only just sown mine. I think they can be sown from late winter to early spring.

Nope, not mine for a few weeks either.

I have said it before, but grow them in a saucer of water, never let it dry out. They love it!

Disaster last year...old seed.... 3 came up!!!! really missed them this winter.

So, with high hopes sowed mine fresh seed last week...like parsley they are very slow to germinate. 3 or 4 weeks and seem to remain seedlings forever.

Andrea, re saucer....do you mean as seedlings once they have germinated?

I know the old adage is put your coat on and go out to water them in the rain./

Yes, they do take a while to germinate, but hang in there, more should pop up. And as Paulottie said, they do seem to stay seedlings for a long time before any substantial growth. Reminds me of my spring onions.

No, in a pot that sits in a saucer of water.

I also pour boiling water over the seeds when sown; and for celery, they are grown in pots for the length of their life and with celeriac, I draw a moat round them for watering.

Scottish newbie - if you've not tried it, I'd go buy one and see if you like it first. They are quite high maintenance on the watering front so if you won't like them......I use them in soups mainly.

I'm hoping to try celery for the first time this year - what size pots do you use? And do they need feeding a lot?

I have to say I fancy trying celeriac (we do like it) but I think I've overdone it on the seed purchases for this year already! As it is I'm thinking of digging up most of the lawn! Except it's kinda nice to have some grass to sit out on in summer.... Decisions decisions!

Sorry for the ultra-daft question coming up. I'm sowing celeriac for the first time too this year ,and I thought I had it sorted in my head until I read this thread.

... er, so do I sow the celeriac in soggy compost, and keep it soggy until maturity, or do I sow as normal, and only keep soggy once seedlings appear?
