I have three still in the ground that went out very late last year after being massacred by pigeons.

I didn't really hold out much hope for them but wanted to give them a chance.

They were about four inches tall over winter, but have had a growth spurt over the past five days and are now nearly 12 inches high.

There is no sign of them swelling out yet, I am not sure if I will get anything from them if if they will go straight to seed.

Has anyone got any advice at all?

    Andy

Mines (the ones in the picture above) are 12-15 cms. tall. They are under a net, in a shelter position, with their cabbage collars, etc. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

I find it odd that you have overwintered them Andy as I grew mine from seed to plate in about 8 weeks this spring-summer.

Sorry. If you do not mind, check page 3. They have barely grow and I took the picture about two months ago I think.

Really? I feel useless. I spend so many hours reading gardening books and blogs, researching old post in this forum and taking notes... My vegs in the polytunnel are great, but nothing grow outdoors except peas and beans.

                Honestly, they grew really quickly
I use them in coleslaw in place of white cabbage. Love them

I planted my seeds yesterday, nothing like waiting until the last minute!

Last year I forgot my plants and they went to seed, so I ate the sprouting shoots - they were a bit like a really sweet and tender sprouting broccol, and there were loads on each plant. That's what I'm planning on doing this year too - I'll wait until they send out their flower shoots rather than eat the swollen stem. Yum .

It's a little more helpful if you could put the post number rather than the page number SG, as we don't all have the same number of posts per page - you can have between 5 and 40 - I have 30, so only have two pages

I am sorry, I didn't know that. I was (same today) writing from a small device. I don't know how to save and repost the picture, (I barely can't type with this wee thing). I'll repost it once I am in a desk pc. But the few ones which survived are really tiny, less than 10 cm. tall.
