  • Square Foot Gardening

This being my second year growing my own I wanted it to be a bit more productive.

    Have found a website,

    http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/scho...tGardening.pdf

It states you can be more productive by growing in square feet, however they seem to think you can grow many veg just in 1square foot! is this true? One of the examples on the website was 9 Spring cabbages in 1foot, surely this can not be right?

The examples look good but sound a little far'fetched.

The only thing I do not get is the fact it allows you to put 16 carrots in the 1foot, but then on the back of the seed packets they say completly different?

Doesn't really matter how you plant them to be honest- if they are too close then the veg will be smaller and have a higher risk of getting mouldy. Nothing needs to be in rows- it just makes weeding easier!

Jaxom's is very useful, I'll see if one of mods thinks it should go on growing tips

So how did everyone get on with their square foot gardening? It's often said that you get more and better produce by making a small patch super-fertile than by spreading out your soil conditioners over a large area. I have found this to be true, in the past when I had only one small bed about 5 foot square we got lots of food out of it, but the temptation to have more ground always wins! A mix of veg works better than monocultures in small and large areas, but is fiddlier to weed and look after. Onions carrots beets and turnips alternating in one bed are much less prone to pests than in beds of one species and spaced about 4" each way you do get more of everything than in rows - at least that was my experience, growing organically.
