  • Worried mother!

Following on from CC's thread about checking on the germination of seeds. I am constantly checking my baby onions. They were sown in january then moved into the greenhouse. They were lovingly given their own little beds , a little drink when they looked thirsty. So do they not seem to be progressing . They're still like blades of grass and a couple seem to have gone floppy. They are now in the mini greenhouse with the door open during the day but I'm so worried that they're no going to get any bigger. Somewhere I think my parenting skills are letting them down. Please help me I am worried for their health.

You could be spoiling them........give them a good talking to & show them who's the boss...........jees, I sound as mad as you now..........

Gently pull the ones that have gone floppy - do they come away? I suspect damping off if so.

Onions can be grown quite dry and will start swelling after they go into the ground in about a month. Until then, they will stay as grass like blades.

Right ..I've given them a good talking to as per Bigmalley's instructions. Then I thought I'd get brave and give them a gentle tug and they seem to be clinging on for dear life. So fingers crossed.

Ok, they need to sit on the drier side of wet, rather than the wetter side of dry......

Ok . I'm letting them out all day now and then in a couple of weeks time I might let them out at night as well with one eye on the weather.

You're too kind to them! As soon as my onions/leeks are up they are kicked out and the space reused.

They're out of the greenhouse and in the mini plastic one cos I havent a cold frame and if I put them on the ground outside Jake'll be running round the garden with them as soon as my back's turned.
