Growing asparagus from roots

I was in Aldi a few days ago, and I bought on offer asparagus roots, 4 plants for £1.99, which I thought was a good offer. When opening them up, ended up having 4 big roots and 1 other smaller root.

I planted asparagus seeds last summer, so I know it will be a few more years before any come up. If possible I want to grow the roots in a big pot, so that I dont have to take up any more area in my veggie patch. But before I put them in the pot, I want to check if they will grow or not in them, and whether the pot is big enough.

Also, can I put two roots in the pot, or is it only big enough for one root.

I will attach a picture of the pot and root for example , the pot if 45am in diameter.

If someone can tell me whether the roots NEED to go in the ground or whether growing in the pots will be sufficient?

Mbronco I haven't heard of successful asparagus growing in pots, to be honest. (However I'm always willing to be corrected by someone who has). It may be better to look upon your asparagus bed as permanent planting and look to the rest of your veg as potential for pot growing.
If the little root has a bud on it then it is a viable plant - otherwise it may just be a detatched bit.

Sorry to say that I'd grow mine in the ground!

You might be OK starting them off one to a pot but...well have a look at this...It's a bit heavy going , but have a look at the graph type drawing of the root system- 5 foot deep and 7 foot wide is the normal spread of the majority of the roots- and that plant is only 6 years old...they carry on for 20 years

I know some peeps on here are growing them in pots, but I don't know how mature they are .
