Carrots outside in boxes

I have some pallet stacking boxes and in January threw some carrot seeds in and covered with scaffolding plastic sheeting, I was going to pull of the plastic yesterday as I thought nothing would have come up as it has been cold and the plastic has been sweating, what a surprise loads of little carrot seeds coming up about 1/2 inch to 1 inch high, quickly replaced plastic, in another box covered the same way I planted some parsnip seed lokked under there , there is something coming up but they do not look like parsnips, what do parsnips 2 leaves look like.

Parsnip seedlings are quite distinctive. They have a pale leaf similar to a corriander or parsley, if that helps! Well done with the carrots!

Great result with the carrots, sometimes if you touch the leaves of parsnips you can smell them on your hand.

I managed to get some 2' high blue barrels this winter and am sowing my carrots in them. I have two sown but no sign of the seedlings yet.

I sowed some Parmex (round) carrots in a fishbox a couple of weeks ago, but since then we have had a couple of severe frosts, so I'm not hopeful. Carrots do well in pots as long as they have sufficient depth of soil. My maincrop Chantenays and Jaune du Doubs will go in when I can get a fork into the soil!

I sowed a few left over seeds in a few flower buckets and tubs last September and stood them in dads unheated greenhouse over winter, some didnt make it other are through. Figured it was worth a go and nothing to lose. Not checked them recently but going down later to see if they are still alive as he put them outside earlier this week as he wanted to clean out the greenhouse ready for his tomatoes.

Will start a few more inside in tubs over the next few weeks to try and get a few early carrots.

Old plasterer's trugs are also great for growing carrots, parsnips and the like.
